960 radio in a 940

Definitely plan on getting the amp. I thought speakers would be similar. My main question is the wiring. I hope its an easy swap. I would think the outputs(speakers) from the amp are similar , it's just the inputs from the ignition system I need to check out.

my 92 740 T wagon only has the small dashboard speakers, and rear door speakers. our old 1993 960 wagon had dash plus front door speakers as well as 2-way rear door speakers. The 960 dashboard is considerably different than the 740/940 dash, ditto the wiring harnesses are quite different.
IIRC, our 960 had a double din stereo, while the 740 has a single DIN. on the 960, the relay panel is moved over to the rigth of the transmission hump, while the fuse panel is over by the drivers door. on the 740/940, the fuse-and-relay panel is behind the ashtray and cigar lighter/tray, so I suspect a double din won't fit in there without running into the relays.
the amp on the 740/940 is on the drivers side above the kickpanel and behind the dash, just left of the steering column. I forget where the 960 amp was.

As far as speakers, my 940 has all 3, dash, front door and rear door, so I'm assuming the amp outputs will be similar. As far as fitting the dbl din unit in my dash, some preliminary measurements show that I'll have to remove the cigar lighter/tray below my current stereo and the new unit should fit as far as height and width. What I didn't think about was depth and possibly hitting the relays. Thanks for pointing that out. The biggest challenge, as far as I see it, will be somehow adapting the different style of mounting clips to work in my dash. That's gonna take some backyard engineering. If I can figure that out the wiring shouldn't be too difficult. Thanks for all the good tips.

personally, I'd just get a good Pioneer, bypass the factory amp and wire it all up direct. somewhere on this forum, I have the wiring list I used on my 92 740 (should be same as a 940) where I installed some really good 2-way component speakers with an external crossovers in the front doors and tweeters in the dash...

Fantastic! These should help a lot. Actually, there's also a '94 960 at the pick n pull. I don't know if it's the cd/cass combo or just cassette, but if it is do you think that might be an easier swap?

Well, it looks like my noble plan to upgrade and stay with original Volvo parts has failed. I was able to pull the radio box from a 960 and it will fit in a 940 overall, which solves the problem of mounting clips. But, as you pointed out, the relay panel in a 960 was moved and moved for a reason. The new unit slid in till the last inch and then it hit the relays. But even if it had fit in depth wise I would have had to alter and trim the bottom where the ash tray fits. Too bad, it would have looked nice. Anyways, I appreciate you getting me the wiring diagrams and I'll keep them for when I wire in an aftermarket unit. Thanks again.

fyi, any decent car stereo place, or online, you can get a harness specific for a 940 that plugs into both the connector to the factory amplifier, and the connector to the factory stereo and brings out all the right wires to connect to an aftermarket stereo, so the stereo drives the speakers directly... Metra or something like that is one of the primary makers of such adapters.
