Default air bag

The SRS light has been on since I bought my 1993 240 wagon several months ago. I've been fixing other stuff and just getting around to the SRS. If there isn't an easy fix, I would like to just disable the airbag. Is that easy and safe to do?

Well on the lines of being safe....
It is there to protect the driver in an accident, for the seat belts wont hold you back as well as a racing seat with a racing harness, and also to add a cushin of protection if the streeting column comes toward you.
Unless you are going to put in a racing seat with a 4,6, or 8 point harness...I would just leave it in, Unless it isn't even working.

Well, it IS diabled right now, if the light is ON! If you don't want to fix it, just take out the bulb so it won't remind you... But at least make sure you always use your belt.

I would like to have an operational airbag, I believe strongly in them. At this point I'm trying to figure out if I can identify and fix the problem myself. I assume the problem is a fault in the crash sensor under the seat. I checked the sensor's ground, which was good. Beyond that I don't know what to do. Replace the sensor?

I don't want to just take it to a Volvo dealer and say "fix it," because I'm afraid they would charge me hundreds of dollars. Anyway, the local Volvo dealership (Salem, Oregon) just went out of business, leaving us Volvophiles in this area high and dry.

Default 1993 Volvo 240 crash sensor

Are there places to find a used one or do you have to buy a new one.
OEM $1,400 on back order anyway. Pete

Have you used the SRS diagnostic port to find the trouble code.

First of all, I'm not terribly thrilled personally, with having nearly 20 year old air bag pointed at my head, particularly when Volvo placed stickers on them saying to replace them in 10 years. Given the 240's safety history, legendary to be sure, it might be good to remember that those #1 safety ratings were obtained w/o air bags. Still, self diagnosis is not terribly difficult...
