Alternator & voltage regulator question
OK, here it is: 1989 244DL (B230F)
It has a Bosch alternator with a Volvo tag on it(ser.# 0120469786 787, 14V/80 amp).
The Chilton's book shows it rates a 70 amp Bosch and a couple different serials for it. I'm unsure whether mine has an integral voltage reg in the back of it, or oneon the firewall somewhere. When looking at pics in the book, I'm thinking it's on the back of the alt.
When it died on my wife, shesaid it had stalled, lights dimmed, and then completely shut-down. I had jumped it and crippled it home. The battery dash lamp was lit, and then I lost all dash readings, speedo, tach, everything. The ceramic fuse for the dash cluster is good.
I pulled the alt and had it tested at a shop. It passed twice. Would it still pass if it had a bad voltage reg on it? The battery was recharged and it tested fine as well. Driving it home again and the battery dash lamp lit up again. She wanted to die but I kept the rpm's up and feathered her in/out of N and D to get her home.
Could the 80 amp Bosch alt have cooked something else? The book shows that 80 amp alt's are rated for turbo's. Let me know if I've missed something else.
Many thanks to you all,
