Am reluctantly selling 1993 240 wagon--what to charge?
Hello all-
I love my 1993 240 wagon and have maintained it well. The odometer stopped at 160K about 2 years ago, but it runs great, has new A/C and tires.
But I have two small children and want more safety features in newer cars, so am reluctantly parting with it. It has some very minor body dings, but the paint is shiny and it's been in a garage the past few years. It gets comments on how nice it looks.
I know it would get next to nothing as a trade-in. I'd like to privately sell but have no idea what to ask for it.
Thanks for any input!!

Take some pictures please. A broken odometer would turn me off, but unless I could tell they were a true Volvo lover, I would stay away, or only pay $500 or something. I really cant tell without any pictures. Does it have any accessories, third row, armrest, door pockets? I guess if it well maintained, and looks good, and its a wagon, $2500 would be nice to someone who cares. $500 to someone who does not care and will beat it to the scrapper.
Go to kbb.com and use their program that determines the value of your car to private party sales. Then knock a bit off that price, and you can say you're selling it below Kelly Blue Book value. Viola, there's your fair asking price. Be honest when filling in information though...and I may be able to tell you how to get that odometer working again.
You could probably get around $2000 for it maybe even $2500 since it seems to be clean and well taken care of. Your minuses is that the milage is unknown and you are missing a trim piece on the front of the car. The 240 wagons seem to be a little more desirable than the sedans.
Well, too late! I listed it on Craigslist for $1800 OBO. Have gotten tons of nibbles and have a guy coming by in the morning at 9 with cash, he's OK with it if it's sound he says. Maybe I could have asked more like you said--I went with b/t KBB "good" and "excellent" -- yes I feel terrible about the trim missing--don't know where that went. Hopefully the guy can pick that up somewhere--it is a pretty car.
Thanks all!

It really matters where you are when it comes to judging the price of many cars, probably all cars... This car could sell for much more in the NWest... Last year of a decent 240 Wagon? $3-4K easy... In the South, different mindset.
I sold it this morning for $1800 to the guy who contacted me yesterday. Not bad for 4 hours on Craigslist. I probably could have asked more--but for the whole odometer thing. He's a big Volvo fanatic who does a lot of his own work. I'm happy a Volvo fan got it.
Thanks all!
Thanks all!
i'll take the structural integrity of a 240 (or 740 or 940) over a pile of computerized 'safety features' any day. all that fancy airbag stuff is for the people who don't wear seatbelts. the back doors on a 240 are way stronger than the doors on most any new car.
Yeah, stuff that breaks down and costs a fortune to fix too. The ABS and SRS idiot lights might have exploded in my cluster, but the iron is all you need, as long as it's not a rust bucket!
How true...the NWest was Volvo's primary target. Just as 50% of all pickup trucks sold in the US are sold in Texas, 50% of all 240's were sold in the Pacific Northwest. Here in Texas, people do try to get upwards of 2k for 92-93 low mile 240's; it doesn't happen often unless the mileage is documented and the interior/body is pristine. 3k for a 20+ year old car with indeterminate mileage is about 2-2.5k too high in my book. But then, I've never paid more than $500 for an rwd Volvo. Price it high and mark it o.b.o.
