Another anoying problem....
Well I have this old 89 Volvo 240 that has had a problem with the automatic shift lever, it just wont line up to the respective positions on the floor indicator, it off by about 1/2 inch. So Reverse displays as N, D as 2 and so on. How hard/difficult is it to adjust this and what all do I have to do to get this fixed? can a novices do it, or is this a shop kind of job?
Thanks, and God bless.

More than likely the shift bushings are probably gone. Is the shifter sloppy - meaning it has a lot of play in it when moving it forwards/backwards. If it is, replace the bushings first. This is the part I am referring to:

There are two of them needed per car.
If the bushings are tight, you may want to check your engine & transmission mounts. If they are shot the engine can shift causing misalignment.
If all that checks out, there is an adjustment on the shifter linkage. I've never adjusted and doubt that I could since mine looks like a solid piece of rust after all of these years in the snow and salt.
