the antenna mast has a long white plastic toothed 'whip' on it that is wound around the 'snail' in the power unit. its not a bad idea to pull the power unit out, open it up, and clean out all the ancient grease and muck, then heavily grease the 'snail' as well as the drive gears, I use green 'marine waterproof bearing grease' (same stuff I use on my bicycle bearings). then reassemble, reinstall the power unit, and follow the instructions with the new mast to install it properly (run the power unit all the way in the 'up' direction, feed the mast whip in as far as you can with the teeth facing the right way, then power the antenna 'down' and push the mast in til it grabs and feed it in as it sucks itself in. reassemble the retainer nut stack on the outside, power it up/down a few times to bge sure it works, wipe it down with some silicone lube when its fully extended, and retract it...
