Default Antenna

My son has a 1991 Volvo 240 with a broken antenna. I would like to get a new one and wanted to know what you guys think of the the rubber flexible ones?

Ive had cars that came with them new, the radio reception sucked.

its quite simple to replace the mast as long as the power unit still works. IPDusa and others sell the real volvo replacement mast, its a 5 minute job to install per the instructions that come with it.

I don't really like the look of the flexible rubber antennas. I have never had to replace my antenna in 20 years and it still works, but I have read that it is rather straightforward and simple to replace.

I replaced the antenna on my 240 with a generic one from autozone and it really didn't seem to get as good reception as the original. I would opt for the original as Pierce suggested.

the antenna mast has a long white plastic toothed 'whip' on it that is wound around the 'snail' in the power unit. its not a bad idea to pull the power unit out, open it up, and clean out all the ancient grease and muck, then heavily grease the 'snail' as well as the drive gears, I use green 'marine waterproof bearing grease' (same stuff I use on my bicycle bearings). then reassemble, reinstall the power unit, and follow the instructions with the new mast to install it properly (run the power unit all the way in the 'up' direction, feed the mast whip in as far as you can with the teeth facing the right way, then power the antenna 'down' and push the mast in til it grabs and feed it in as it sucks itself in. reassemble the retainer nut stack on the outside, power it up/down a few times to bge sure it works, wipe it down with some silicone lube when its fully extended, and retract it...
