Average RPM on the highway?
Hi all,
I'm just asking out of interest what the RPM should be when driving on the highway? I have a 740GL with the AW70L and i get about 2.5k when going 68 ish mph (110kph in Australia - highway speed limit).
I've seen 740T's with AW71L transmissions get 2k on the dot.
Is this a problem with my car, or the final gear ratio is just different on the AW71s rather than the 70s?
2000 vs 2500 seems like a rather large difference when cruising on the highway, and it is quite noticeable.
For reference, I'd be getting 2000 rpm when im going 85, maybe 90 kph kph.

What you are getting is about right, actually RPM should be higher. No way can you get 2,000RPM at 68MPH, well, at least not in our US version cars... The AW71 are geared the same as the AW70 I believe. Again may be in Australia there could be some variations...
I also saw this image online:

But i just found out that apparently U.S. 740T's only came with the AW71, not the AW71L, so no lockup converter. This explains why the RPM is lower. I don't know the validity of this statement, but it makes sense why the RPM would be so much lower on non-U.S. cars.

indeed, the AW70 and 71 have the same transmission gear ratios, but the cars were sold with different final drive ratios.
my US model 240 and 740T both did about 3000 RPM at about 68 MPH.
my US model 240 and 740T both did about 3000 RPM at about 68 MPH.
60 mph at 2200 rpm
65 mph at 2500 rpm
70 mph at 3000 rpm.
Considering the tach isn't in 1 rpm increments the rpm is subjective but it's within a small margin of error.
huh, if you were doing 70 @ 3000 rpm, then at 2200rpm I'd expect you to be going 51-52 MPH, not 60, unless there was a lot of slop/slip in the torque converter at the moment.
and 2500 should have been more like 58-60 MPH.

Don't know but that's what I got.
