Default AW71 transmission issue.

Was towing a small boat (say 1000lbs) back home today with the 90 745 turbo. The transmission was rebuilt by a Volvo dealership about 20k kms ago, I have receipts for a $3k rebuild from the previous owner.
About an hour in, the auto kicked down from overdrive to go up a hill and stayed out of overdrive. This has been accompanied by a leak from the left hand side of theauto box, I haven't had the car on stands to have a look from where as yet. The leak may have started before teh overdrive event, I seem to recall a slight auto trans smell beforehand.
The overdrive came back after I stopped for about 5 minutes. I proceeded at a slightly lower speed the rest of the way home (3 hour drive) and had no further issues except for some more trans leakage. It's probably lost about 600ml (1 pint) of fluid.
The car has sat at home for about 5 hours now, no more than a couple of residual drips off the floorpan/transmission since it stopped, no discernible dripping when engine running.
Now, the trans may have been overfilled, it was fairly high on the dipstick when I got it and I just hadn't gotten around to draining fluid.
So the questions, what could be leaking from left side of box, could it be related to the overdrive manfunction and could it have been that teh auto box was just overfull and towing has heated the fluid enough for it to expand and possibly come out a breather?
Is the overdrive solenoid on the left side of trans? I know these like to leak.

Regards, Andrew.

Typhoon,
i
I am no expert on tranys but the overdrive solenoid is on the drivers side of trans just behind the bell, above the pan. Mine went south on me about a year ago and I pulled mine and cut a grove in the end to bypass it. The thing has 2 bolts ond is alitltle tight to get to, but speed wrenchs will be a plus. There is an "O ring" that seals it in trans, your might of built up to much pressure and got blow by. Thec or Tisp would be able to give you more solid tech advice. I would pull it and check--replace "O ring". Good luck let us know how it goes please.

Well it does sounds like it was just over filled and it was leaking from all the extra heat from the towing.
If you havent yet, you should clean the lower part of the trans and the OD, check the fuild level, then see if it still leaks. (OD solenoid is on the left side of the car.)
I dont see how you could have a leak after a Rescent Rebuild, but you never know.
here is a good link to help with the OD and other trans parts: http://www.vcoa.org/700-900-faq/Tran...to.html#AW7071
