Default Best lowering and shock options for a 240

I am going to lower my 86 244 and wanted to see what people's thoughts were on the shocks that they used which worked with IPD lowering springs? I want a nice stance with a bit more firm ride without loosing a somewhat cumfy ride.

Thanks pierce . I figured that would be a good shock. I would like the 16x7 or 8" rims offset to fill the wheel well nicely. What and where can I get a set of rims? Also what size tires. I can rol the fenders to accept a tighter fit but I also want it to be functional. I see some cars that have a great meaty set of rims on them and some 16x7 all around. I'm even thinking if going with steeliness if I can figure out a company that will widen them for me.. What is the tipical offset on a volvo 240 to clear the inside rear well?

I wouldn't go over 16", 15's would be better. I would stick with stock Volvo wheels from other RWD models and they fit with no hassle. These wheels pop up on forums like this, craigslist, ebay, and so forth. 7" is likely too wide, 6.5" was the widest 16" Volvo put on the sportier 740/940 models.

these are all the stock RWD wheels,
Volvo 200/700/900 Alloy Wheels

Draco and Virgo turbo were commonly used 15" 240 wheels for sportier models back when they did that. most of those other 15's were used on 740/940/960 cars. I put the 6.5x16" Hydras on my 740 turbo (they came with select 740/940 turbo models as an option), and they almost make the ride too harsh on rough roads.

On a 740/940, you'd use a 205/55-16 on the Hydra, I'm not sure if thats appropriate for a 240 or not. Stock, you probably have 185/70-14 ? The key factor is finding a tire with close to the exact same outer diameter, same number of turns per mile, and about the same or slightly higher load rating.

On rims, you can use many 14-16" rim with a 5x108mm bolt circle, and ET +20mm or +25mm. You can't use the wheels from later FWD Volvo's, these have a offset of +40 or 45mm, and will scrape stuff.

Good info. I think I have seen some newer volvo wheels with spacers and they work? I think maybe 20mm spacers? With longer wheel studs.
Are volvo wheel studs screw in or press in?

Step 1) buy an 850 turbo wagon (thats what that is). and never drive over a speed bump, nor over any driveways. and expect pinch flats and/or bent rims any time you go near a crack or pothole or railroad track. oh, and dental bills for the teeth you rattle out. and the snickers and laughter of anyone you pass who has any intelligence.

that "look" is, IMHO, the look of STUPID. Turn a nice utilitarian car into a USELESS toy.

not an 850. still a 740 or 940.

the wagon has: Nya 18" Ocean MK18 Fälg Volvo 240 740 940 | Jönköping

FWD Volvo rims work with 25mm spacers: Volvo 25mm H&R TRAX+ Wheel Spacers 240 740 760 780 940 960 H&R 112724 HR5035652

16" with a 225/50 would be nice.

I knew you would say that. The first picture is a 240. This car is not and never will be my daily driver . My s60 is for that.

PS my wife also wears G string. Does that make her a ****. Heheheheheh. Just kidding pierce. I appreciate your time and input!

if you lower via cutting springs, your suspension is that much easier to bottom out since you've lost about 2" of compression travel. proper lowering springs are stiffer to stave off bottoming out, and normally are used with a stiffer damper too.

with those IPD lowering springs, the sportier Bilsteins would be a good choice. I forget what they call them now, they used to be HD (vs the softer stock-like Touring or TC).
