Picked up a blower motor today from NAPA (BK 6552407) hoping to replace a recently failed one in my wagon.

When I got the old one off and compared the two they look more than a little different (photos below).

Anyone else have a similar experience, advice or any ideas on where I can pick up the right one?
***Note: The wiring on the NAPA unit is nothing more than me trying to "make it work."***

oh. it looks like 740 blower motors changed after 1988, per some info on the fcp site, the single wire version might be for 1983-1988, while the two wire versions are for 1989+ 740 and all 940.

you might clean the contacts and connectors on the resistor pack thats stuck on the outside of the air ducting... I'd probably replace it if it looks like its too baked (often old dying motors will overstress the R-pack). the various pins and resistors are used to slow the motor down to different speeds (on my 92 740 there's 5 speeds). I don't use speeds 4 very often, that likely puts the most stress on the resistors (speed 5 bypasses the resistors entirely, speed 4 goes through 1 resistor, speed 1 spreads way less current through all 4 in series)

 

Just had the new fan delivered. Looks just like the old one. The directions, however, are telling me to use a hacksaw and the provided adaptor ring.

In my opinion, if it fits, you don't cut or modify anything... unless, of course, there's a good reason to.

Is there any reason to not just use the existing housing unmodified?

i wonder if those instructions aren't confusing the older version for the newer?

the picture on FCP's website of the VDO fan *looked* just like the original 'new' version, while that other one they had was 'adaptable' and had an adapter ring or whatever.

Popped it in and it fit like a glove without any modifications. Doesn't seem to push air as well as the old one did but I'll take some heat over no heat any Chicago winter day.

I'll do some more troubleshooting when the days get a little warmer.

A funny thing happens when you plug the fan in the wrong way. Since it's DC, it'll spin the wrong way.

I pulled the panel and saw that that's exactly what I did (The coupling on the FCP's VDO fan can be connected either way).

So, now that it's spinning the right direction, it works like a champ.
