Default Odometer 1990 740GL Rex

Hello all,

I am new to this forum, but not others. I am currently in the process of completing a head gasket change today. 2 Saturdays, on weekends work!

Anyway, I completed a post on a different forum as follows:

I bought this car about 3 years ago. I moved from Austin, to Fort Worth (180 miles due north)May '04. The winters are colder here on avg 5-10 degrees, daily. I know it's nothing compared to some other places. This did not have this problem prior to this winter.

However, this year I obtained a job at DFW airport only 27 miles away. I am just as ticked off about gas prices, as the rest of you. But since temps have dropped lately, I can't get accurate gas milage readings.

I work 4 days a week, overnight, and rarely use my vehicle the other days. So on my way home in the morning, I allow my brick to warm up no more than 10 minutes.

I begin driving, and notice my only my odometer is not working. All other gauges work fine. After whatever temperature the car decides to reach (warmed-up), the odometer begins working, and works until it sits in the cold for more than 4 hours or so.

After getting home, sleeping, and up again. I run errands, and other things. Odometer doesn't seems to fail.

What can I get to to warm up faster to get the odometer to get to operating temps, in the morning.

I have lost about 300-500 miles so far. Last year, when gas prices began rising, and I drove 44 miles to work, in the colder temps, it did not do this. Please Help!

Re: In reply to some of the responses I had received, I removed the cluster, and speedo/odometer assy. This was an attempt to unstick the gears, and/or check for broken teeth. There was not bad physical evidence. I was not able to access the gears, to the odometer, due to the metal, unremovable case over this one section in the center. I wish I had a digital camera to show pix of this. I had re-assembled, and driven with same problem on cold days.

Should I spend the money to replace it, or do you have any additional hints?

After I complete the head gasket job today, I will begin working on odometer problem, next weekend. Again, only Odometer stops, speedo is good.

Thanks for the long-windedness.
Kevin
