Default blower motor woes

89 740 4 dr, manual tranny. The blower motor will sometime work if you turn the switch to off, turn key to run, then turn blower on. If it comes on, all 4 speeds work and it will run for a few minutes ok, if you turn the key off while the blower is running, then turn the key back on, the blower will not come on again. The blower sounds ok when it's running, so I don't think it's the blower motor itself. Would the resistor do this? any other ideas? Not wanting to rip the dash out of this car at all.

thanks
dave

the blower motor is easy to get at
it is in the upper right side of the passenger foot well
and should be able to get the connector apart
so you can test for power and ground
i have had one with a poor ground
but more likely is the motor itself
see if it comes on when tapping on the blower motor
the brushes are likely worn
and will have to replace the motor
otherwise you can pop out the heater controls
and check for power in and out of the switch
do all the other elec. functions work when this happens?
