Body Panels for 89 240 DL
I have a 1989 240 DL. Recently I was hit in the front driver fender causing damage to both front fenders, hood, bumper and d.s. side marker assembly. Does anyone know a reputable place to buy new or used body panels? My frame is not bent and my engine only has 13x,xxx miles so I'm not willing to give up on it just yet. I am in West Michigan.
Thanks for your help in advance,
Sy

the fenders are bolt-on. any decent body shop can get aftermarket generic panels that fit well enough, and whatever you get is going to need paint. its that or cruise junkyards. odds are 50-50, there's some bent stuff in the cowling, radiator support, etc... a body shop likely can straighten all that out sufficiently easier than replacing with new.
you should be able to use fenders and most other body parts from about ANY 240 from circa 1982 forward, the headlights, turn signals, and grill are from 1986+.
There's at least 3 styles of hoods, flat-nose (very early), early long nose, and later long nose, again I think the crossover to late long nose is circa 1986. Not sure I understand whats going on with your hood, it looks straight in the pics but almost like the hinges are bent 'up'.
lights you can find on ebay etc. the "Depo" brand of chinese replacements aren't bad, pretty close to exact OE replicas, I've used them on several cars (volvo and others).
my gut estimate is thats about a $2000-2500 job at a decent body shop. see if they will negotiate cheaper for cash. I'd find a owner-operator bodyshop that has done a fair bit work on of older european imports. avoid chains.

my 87 240 after getting its grill bashed in. I took everything off including the bumper, but silly me, I hung the bumper on to take this pic.
we had to repair the plates behind the headlights as well as the cross piece on top of the radiator and the cowell under the lights/behind the bumper. the shop straightened all that out nicely and repainted it, along with the barely crumpled left fender. my hood was fine as the impact was to the grill below it.
6-7 years later, still lookin' good.
