Hi guys

91 240 sedan 111K miles

Two weeks ago I hit a medium size pot hole (Rear tire passenger side) here in Philly and instantly my Brake Failure Light came on. The Brakes works and feels fine. I just had the brakes done all around a week before I hit the pot hole by my Volvo guy. Any thoughts on how I can fix this and what to look at first? I know the brake system is working but I hate seeing that bright red Brake Failure Light on. I would like to try and fix this myself, my Volvo guy is good but he's not cheap. And I don't mind getting my hands dirty to save some $$$$ when I can.

I would start by jacking it up, taking the wheel off and investigating the caliper and all lines and wires following under the car. See if there are any leaks or loose wires. Also check the fluid reservoir, see if it's low. If it is, and the brakes were done last week, it might have a small leak compromising the system pressure. Hard to say though.

Read these, you may get some answers. I am the original poster. This is not your situation but the information is pertinent. I FINALLY got all the air out of my system and has been working ever since.

I just checked my Brakes all look good no leaks or bend lines. Next I'm going try bleeding and replacing with clean fluid.........after I read you links

 

Well, fair enough. At least you rule out real error, if your brakes still work, and the lines aren't screwed, then you know it's some bug that isn't going to cause real brake failure. Takes the emergency out of it.

 

Hey, newbie here...

General automotive issue I've had in the past with this:

Worn e-brake pedal mechanism (likely not the cause being that you have a handbrake, but something related is still THEORETICALLY possible) OR the impact from the pothole jarred plug for the sensor in the brake fluid reservoir on the master cylinder.

Don't own a 240 yet, but were I to have the same issue, this is the first thing I would check, myself.
