Default Brake Lights on rescued 245

Just bought my first 240 in November, saved it from going to the wreckers so you can imagine what I'm dealing with. It's endearing, runs well and saves my 850 from the beating it takes during Calgary winters.

Lots of the problems that I've found with this car were super easy to fix. Brake job was straight forward, dash lights came back on after smacking the dash a couple times, cruise control works after adjusting clutch switch, even the motor mounts were changed out with ease (who the f*ck puts the oil filter directly above a motor mount!?). This current problem that I'm having is eluding me though.

When the headlight switch on the dash is in the 'off' position, both the brake lights work. But when the headlight switch is in either of the other two positions, 'markers' and 'on', the drivers side brake light wont work. The tail lights do, which is nice and all, but I'll get ticketed for sure if I can't make this brake light work. I've had the brake light assembly out, replaced both brake light bulbs, and all the contacts appear to be working. Pretty confident that this brake light was working before I replaced the passengers side as well.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

it could be something simple like a bad ground at the left rear light cluster...

It seems to be an intermittent problem, the brake lights work as they please. The brake light grounds are clean, but I think I'll take Darby's advice from the adjacent headlight thread and clean as many grounds as I can find. Noticed today that the engine ground is completely broken off so that's probably a good place to start.

Where under the dash should I be looking for ground connections? Most of the electrical troubles I'm having, including wavering interior lights, window switches and the stereo not working, should be grounded in the interior of the car.
