Default Rescued a 96 850 R

Well I just purchased a 96 R last night the guy had owned it for 5 years and the only maintenance was oil change and fuel pump. The car runs great what a blast. It needs a lot of things. It has blue smoke which I assume is the turbo leaking and needs to be rebuilt. Also the whole front end and suspension needs to be rebuilt. The dash is loose and rattling all over. The ac is trying to work but needs freon. It has smoke coming out of the dip stick so I assume it needs PVC replacement.
I bought this for my son he is 15 and we hope to bring the car back and get it restored !

Where is the best place for coil overs and suspension parts ? I also need engine parts like the PVC stuff and tinting belt.

Is it possible to buy engine internals at a fair price? I'm thinking of rebuilding the engine but don't have tourq specs and so on. We'd like to bore the cylinders all new bearings and h beam rods with a lot higher boost. I'm afraid I won't be able to find engine gaskets and so on to finish the engine.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'm in the process of saving a '98 S70 T5. I'm mainly just doing a mechanical restoration.

Man, you can make these cars plenty fast without digging into the motor and installing high beam rods etc. Most people believe you can squeeze about 310 HP out of them with a larger turbo, performance exhaust, some intake mods and the right tune. I'm talking spank a Cobra power (or at least a 5.0 Stang).

Hope things go smooth for you. There are several Volvo parts suppliers that can get you most of what you need. iPd has a lot of stuff and I buy a lot from FCP.

Thanks for the reply! I'm families with IPD but not the other. So far the R is in rough shape but today we bought a 96 non turbo 850 as a sonar car it is extremely clean. We're thinking of using the dinar cars platform and transferring all the R's components over to it. The r car is simply just worn out. My main concern is swapping the wiring harness for the engine and tyranny ??? The R has the sport mode button for the tranny .
Does anyone on here know where to get engine rebuild parts , gasket sets and so on???
We also need wiring diagrams to do the swap.

There is a guy over on www.SwedeSpeed.com currently redoing a T-5R. He has wiring any everything else torn out right now. Photos and all.

I would not swap to a non R vin car if I were you. To much work to end up with a car without the R vin, unless the R is rusted out. If so, you can pick up another R for next to nothing. I picked one up last year for $280. Had it back together for about $1,300 which included a motor swap.

Thanks RSI. I thought the same thing. The r is so much better as far as vin goes but the dash is literally hanging. It rattles like a spray can of paint. I'll have to check out the diagrams to complete the swap. I'm thinking of going with a manual tranny I just don't know what tranny is best for the swap. It will be ch simpler to justify the swap without the auto economy/ sport stuff involved. Plus the tcm!!!
What manual tranny is best?
I found a 98 wagon with a manual in it will that work? I'll need the pedal assembly and everything!!!

Do the PCV system and see if that clears up your smoke problem before you start getting into the turbo. I've bought several cars from people who said "it's smoking, so obviously it needs a turbo". I replaced / cleaned the PCV system and the smoking stopped.

For the PCV stuff, I just go the my local dealer. However, my local dealer is pretty awesome I think. Great guys, who are actually into Volvos, rather than just guys who happen to work at a Volvo dealership. They're a great source of information too. Your experience may be different at your dealership. I think I got lucky.

Last time I bought the PCV hose (goes from the separator to the intake) I think it was about 60 bucks. I've found that the little valve on the intake, right before the turbo, is often clogged. It's the smallest opening in the system. Spray that out with carb cleaner, as well as the separator, and you may be good.

Fair is relative. I was going to bore a block I had laying around, but as soon as I priced oversized pistons that project ended quickly. Five pistons with rings was over a thousand bucks. May be a fair price, but it didn't seem financially prudent to me at the time. There's a whole lot of other things I'd rather spend a grand on.

As for gaskets and belts and stuff, that's available through pretty much any parts store. Personally, I use rockauto . com

Thanks for the tip I believe the PVC could be it. The more I look at these cars it seems a better idea to run them until they go with a mild tune and turbo/ exhaust upgrade.
