Default brakes issue

I just bought an 87 240 from a friend. When he bought the car about six months ago he was told by the previous owner that the brakes needed to be replaced. That was done and about 20 minutes into his first drive the brakes gave out. Luckily he was able to get the car to stop with any accidents. Car was brought back to the guy that replaced the brakes, he couldn't find any issues. About a week later the same thing happened. Brakes just all of a sudden gave out. Of course after 2 of these experieces he was hesitant to drive the car. He has driven the car here and there since without issue. However he just wanted out of the vehicle and sold to me. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. The car itself is in great shape with good running engine, etc. however I really don't want to drive it until I have it looked at. Anybody have any clues? Thanks.

Default RE: brakes issue

could it be your brake booster?
Mine had a slow hissing noise coming from behind the steering wheel area...i'm about to replace itpaying $114 at Auto Zone as opposed to a Volvo part for $750. I was told the brake booster could either leak slowly and go gradually or happen fast (pumping the brakes to stop) Luckily it's gone slowly and I haven't exp'd any stopping issue.
Good Luck

On mine brake light safety junction box electrical nylon plug was leaking after trying about ten things I found some teflon tape worked miracles, no more leaks. Sometimes low tech is the best!
