Howdy there friends,
so I just got new bushings for the rear torque rod. I’m wondering if they are to be installed in a certain position, as you can see from the pictures, they have small gaps between the rubber. So my question is; are the gaps supposed to be verticale or horizontal? Or does it not matter?

 

this for a 240 or 740/940 ? they have different torque arm arrangements...

that said, I don't think there's any specific orientation?

oh maybe I'm wrong. pictures show the openings perpendicular to the direction of the rod..... these are 240 rods...


that makes sense, actually, as the forces are in line with the rods, so you wouldn't want the gaps that way or they'd be too mushy. the bushings need to be able to 'twist' a little when the rear axle is at an angle (hard cornering, or a bump under one wheel, etc).

 

Excellent, thank you for the quick reply, and yes, it is off of a 240. So orienting them vertically will give it more structure, will do!

 

btw, have you gotten the old ones out of the rods yet? thats going to be a **** of a job, best done with a 20 ton press and a precise set of dimensioned tubes to use as the tools in the press

 

Funny you mention that because I’m having that exact issue now. Fortunately, I work at a shipyard and the machinist here has a press I might be able to use. Waiting for him to come back from lunch and we should be rolling again soon!

 

The beefier part should always be in direct path of the force. For trailing arm bushings, where the force is vertical, the beefier part should be vertical. For torque rods, the force is horizontal and thus the beefier part should be horizontal - as is demonstrated in the photo Pierce posted.
