Buying 740 turbodiesel
Hi Everyone,
I found a TURBODIESEL 740. Average condition, inside out.
HOW MUCH do you think is acceptable to be paid for it? (from...to)
It is a 1985 Volvo 740 turbodiesel (745 wagon), not rusty, running condition, registered and daily used. No visible damage, not modified. Ac dead, all suspension is very bad: springs, shocks all original. All must go out asap. Brakes not good, 1 caliper frozen I think. New rotors for the front needed as well, all pads too. Mileage not documented ( maybe 90-150k) but currently nicely running with some leaks here and there. No belt service since. No blowby at the main cap. No rust, interior is Ok. All headliner hangs but No missing parts,no damage on body. AUTOMATIC tranny works but not yet inspected thoroughly.
How much would it be? The average/FAIR price? What is your guess?
What is your opinion on ''Not less than ....'' or ''definitely not more than ... ''???
Please help asap. I had Volvos before but I am not fresh on prices by now.
How much shall I pay for this beast?
Volvo 740 wagon turbodiesel 6 cylinder engine 1985. Top and minimum price appr.?
Your quick response, professional opinion is greatly appreciated, thank you!

If you aren't handy and planning to make all of the repairs yourself then I would not consider the car. It seems like it needs a lot of different things that will quickly increase the total price of the car. I personally would not pay over $800-$1000. If it was in perfect mechanical condition meaning the suspension is perfect, the A/C is working, and brakes working than it would probably cost $1800-$2000 even more if it is in really good condition. Another minus is that the millage on the car is unknown. Who know how many miles does it really have.
Thanks for your comments.I am planning to repair it myself (smaller things) but I am absolutely no big man around the engine itself. I could simply hope that there would be someone who could help me out with suggestions and-or the work itself.
I am totally scared of the zf22 tranny and would love to hear your personal experiences/knowledge on those automatic troublemakers. Are they?
Honestly, I would love to swap it to m46. How much would it be to complete such a work? Time length of labor, parts appr. prices and the labor cost of doing it. How much does it take to have a m46 into this car? Does it really scary to have an automatic tranny? I had many volvo, all with manuals, never any issues. How is the zf22?
Please help asap.
This '85 740 turbodiesel Volvo is nice but not perfect at all.
OH btw. Its VIN does not show up in the usa system but accurate according to a swedish vin-check site. How to get a traffic/accident/title/history report on it without a system that sees this VIN?
How is 3000 for this car if the tranny is great?Owner asks for much more. Why? He probably got some money into it, having it fixed at pricey places. I dont know....
I just wanted to have a td 740 or 760 again and can not wait to get one.
Do you know anyone anywhere in the usa who has and sells it maybe? I would love to get involved. especially for a manual! Please help me to become a Volvo member again. I am so much ready

I have purchased several Volvo's for under $2,000. There is NO WAY I would pay more than $1,000 for that car. It doesn't sound like the car has ANY collector value. It's not in mint condition, it's 25+ years old, there is ZERO resale market for it, actually, most folks would NOT own the car. In most cases, you couldn't give it away. Here you are, not even the owner yet, and you are seeking advise on doing MAJOR work. Likely, ever single piece of plastic, inside and out, has to be as brittle as thin speghetti still in the pack. I don't see the value. Offer the guy $1,000 or less and if he doesn't take it that day get yourself a nice mid-90's stick and never look back. If he calls you two days later tell him the new offer is $800, yes I do mean drop what you will pay him $100 per day that they mess around with you.

Volvo 740 turbodiesel, 1985, wagon, automatic zf22 transmission.
Outside, the car has no rust, no damage, no paint issues at all. Inside, the car is perfect looking, clean. ((( Engine running nice, sounds close to healthy, but needs adjustments of course, all timing stuff, belt, valve adjustments.
Odo says 82000 something miles, still working but I know it is easy to cheat on those))) ! no service records available
I simply love the looks of this car, amazed by the condition (1985) and would loe to have it but scared of the zf22 tranny and the engine itself, mostly because of the tming belt replacement----i have no connections to any good volvo guys who could do that safely. Any ideas? Where to go, who to ask for. Dealers laught at me. is it diesel? wtf a diesel volvo? modified? did you build it? diesel? why is it a diesel etc etc... when did you put the engine in? etc etc... ---they only care about the newer volvos...
All of you say that this car can not worth more than 2000? So unbelievable for me but will research all volvo places to confirm.

I have 4 topics. Please try to say something about these.
1. How come that the 17digit VIN does not show up in the system anywhere? (checked by the swedish site and it says all data correctly --- gives me some details of the car, year, tranny, but nothing like records of accidents or stuff...
2. ZF22 tranny swap into m46. How much approximately if you done it. Parts and labor. Where to take the car to do it?
3. The front of the car has some serious looking action. Watch this. The front corners at the turnlights. Get there and push it down to test the suspension components and boooom, the car goes down easily as many ties as you wish, softly like a ship in the ocean waves....and then as you release it jumps up like crazy and goes up and down. What is that? All corner of the car do that but the front aczion is so huge on both sides. I had volvos, 740, 760, all of them were doing some ship on ocean movements but this car now is strange.
What can be the reason of this? Shocks, maybe the springs or any idea? Maybe both, or broken spring, idk. ??? I never saw a broken coil in any of my volvos life.
4. timing belt was not done since 30.000 and it is now 83 and counting. Idk if mileage is true or not---vin does not give me any data on title or records at dmv or accidents or anything , unfortunately. How to get that?
Oh btw, the timing belt issue.
What to replace if I want a thorough service around the timing area? What other components should be replaced? tensioner, pulley, etc and how about rear belt and valve adjustments? Please let me know how to ask for a great timing belt service that is hopefully the future lifesaver of this magnificent edition 740 turbodiesel volvo.
I figured that it is not enought to get the new belt and put it on. So, please, comment on any of my issues if you are still reading my crap.
Thanks for your attention, all your advice on this beast is appreciated.

Is this thread serious? You're kidding right? One of my friends thought all Volvos were turbo.
As for your #3, it doesn't take a rocket sciencetist to know when shocks and struts are GONE, heck, may even be missing on that car.
My final words, I thought I suggest that you post questions about this car in the 740 section? Dang!

My 1st Volvo was a 1985 760 Turbo Diesel. I really liked the car, but when I moved from DC to Colorado it would not run worth a damn in the high altitude. In 1992 I got $1,000 for it and it was in perfect condition cosmetically.
I would not buy this car. I would not even take it if it was given to me. Mine smoked like crazy even when it was brand new. I bought it with 9K on the clock and had 160K on it when I sold it.
Nobody ever tailgated me in it though. They would not be able to see where they were going when I punched it. Less smoke meant less power.
