Hi Volvo folks!

I'm looking to purchase a 1992 Volvo 740. It's from the original owner, only 119,200 miles on it, seemingly excellent condition. Here's the posting: 1992 Volvo 740 Station Wagon (Gold)

I haven't had a chance to look at it in person yet, but I've spoken to the seller on the phone. The only issues that I know of right now are:
1) broken odometer
2) possible broken speedometer
3) makes a "scratching" sound for a few second when it's started

I'm just wondering if the price they're listing it for is something you guys think is reasonable. It seems a bit high to me, but being new to the Volvo world, I realize I might be missing something.

Thats a $1500 car with a broken speedometer/odometer, and for being "garaged" the bumpers are very faded.

 

$4900? that number is wishful thinking on the part of the seller/not serious. keep looking.

 

Yep, trade in value per KBB is in the $1200 range, private sale in the 1800 range. The low mileage is not as important as the age - you will probably need to replace a lot of rubber bits - timing belt/drive belts, vacuum lines, hoses etc. If you like the car, offer $1500 but if you want to spend more, you can shop 850s/V70s and get a car with 50-100 more HP and better gas mileage, better parts availability.

The Kelly Blue Book price I got was around $2,300, though. I wonder what we did differently.

Am I wrong to assume that this is a good car though, in general? From what I've read, it can last for many many more miles. If they take a *much* lower price, is it worth the investment?

 

A 740 is a good choice, 940 moreso imo. I wouldn't touch a FWD Volvo unless if you don't mind dropping the gas tank to replace rubber hoses. Been there done that myself. That paticular car worries me, 119k city miles can be rough on a suspension.

 

So, it may have 200k miles, depending on when the odo broke! It definitely has more than 119k... $1,000 car...
