Compatibility of 740 and 940 Front End by Year
Hi All!
I have an '89 740 (Amanda, see signature) that needs a new headlight glass, new blinker plastics, and new light wipers in the front. I also want to put in Fog lights, and like the look of the 940's front lights with the fog lights built in.
I'm trying to figure out the compatibility. I've been searching a bit, and have found some conflicting information, and some incomplete information. In the interests of people everywhere, I want to make a compendium of the front end compatibility here.
So, without further ado, please help me fill in the gaps, correct me where I'm wrong, and add knowledge to this thread!
Volvo 740 years start-1988 are known as "pre-facelift" 740s (IS THIS RIGHT?)
Not really compatible with 940 fronts.
I'm a little confused on whether the facelift was 1989 or 1990?
Volvo 740 years 1989-end had a "facelift" done, and are pretty compatible with the 940s.
As per Daim writing at 740 (Facelift) headlight reflectors - Volvo Owners Club Forum, the following need to be changed to integrate the front from a 1990 940:
Looking forward to clarity, both for me and for anyone with a 740.

As per Daim writing at 740 (Facelift) headlight reflectors - Volvo Owners Club Forum, the following need to be changed to integrate the front from a 1990 940:
1. Hood (the 940 hood has a more narrow "point" to the end)
2. Bumper (this has a point in it)
3. Cables for foglights (as these are included in the 940 headlights)
4. The bumper dampers
5. The radiator grill
6. Headlights + indicators
More information (and confusion) here: 940 front end on my 740 - Turbobricks Forums2. Bumper (this has a point in it)

940 started in 1991 in the USA at least.
1990 740's have a unique front end, it LOOKS like the later ones but nothing is quite the same.
1991+ have two styles, with integrated fogs, and without. to swap between these, you need the trim, the grill, AND the headlights+turn signals. and the grill mounting points aren't compatible, so to mount that grill will require some hackery.
I don't know much about 740's pre 1990.

The major change was starting with 1990 models. A '90 740 you can morph into a 940, mainly "fog light" front end, is all that's different.
760 started to look like a 940 starting with the 1988 MY, with fog light front end.
You CANNOT make a 1989 and earlier 740 look like a 940/960!
A 1990 is a little different than 1991 and later 740, but it can be converted into a fog light front end with little modification.

So I found this same question asked and answered elsewhere (why I didn't find it before is a mystery to me): https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...ibility-74874/
To summarize:
Volvo 740 from initiation till 1989 were one type of front end. Note that there were different configurations of the headlamps, but the grill size, bonnet, and headlamp holes (presumably) were all the same.
The 1990 Volvo 740 got a "facelift", is incompatible with -1989, looks similar to the 1991+, but is not easily forward compatible either.
1991 onwards is identical to the 940 series.
Thank you all for your feedback!
