Will a 940 rear end fit a 240 rear end?
I have a 92 240 wagon with a noisy rear, possibly worn rear end bearings. Should I try to get it fixed or change the rear with a used one. Someone has a 940 rear for $150 and my friend can replace it for free. That is if this rear fits. What do you think?
We bought this car to donate to a local widower in need and any help will be appreciated. We have to do a few more repairs on the car and the budget is tight.

Volvo rearends
How can one tell if it is a 1031 or 1041 and are all the 240 sedan and station wagon rear ends the same gearing? what about the 90 - 240 rolling chassis sedan that I am thinking sticking the 2.4N/A Diesel VW engine along with it corresponding sedan standard transmission in chassis - will I have to change out the rear end ? or are these the same and how might I tell? Is it easier to just change out the gear/cluster verses whole rear end?
Thanks

I believe wagons came with 4.1 from the factory, while the other models got 3.9, 3.7..etc. There is a label on the axle. If the rear end is covered in grime and Sh*t, it will have to be clean first to see it. You should be able to use the same rear end, but you might need a custom driveshaft.
