Default Cooling System Issue

FYI- I am by No mean good at cars, I do online research and get the help that I can.
My 740 turbo wagon's cooling system is acting a bit off, radiator is bad and needs replacing, but would like some advice if anyone is familiar with these issues: if water/coolant isn't refilled every- every other day it over heat (engine doesn't get very hot but the gauge will get to past red). Fan doesn't kick on until the gauge has been red for a while, and then when it is on will sometimes stay in even when the car is of (did some research and could be the thermostat stuck in closed?)
Check engine light came on today, due to the overheating issue (something with the ECT?)
Thanks to anyone who can help, please pm if you have some good advice or similar experience.

Don't worry as very shortly you will blow the motor and not have to be concerned about any lights coming on. Have it towed and get it fixed . By the way read up on the function of the warning lights and gauges and what to do when they come on.

probably more than one thing going on. Take it to a mechanic and yes best if you have it towed. Most think that they cant afford a mechanic but most of the time you cant afford not to find a good one. It will make your life easier and less stressful. Chasing problems w.o. knowledge cant get expensive quick.

IF it was mine I would figure out where the coolant is going. Obviously there is a leak. Could be leak in radiator, bad hose, water pump and so on. The thermostat could be sticking, Buy a Bentley manual and read up. Get familar with the car functioning.
