Crack in exhaust pipe before 1st muffler... LOUD!
I noticed the other day that when I started my 1990 740 turbo there was a louder than usual idle/rev sound coming from under the passenger side. I got out and looked under the passenger side at the exhaust and the pipe had a crack right before the 1st muffler/resonator. I could smell the gas and feel the air coming out of the crack. Any ideas how much this would cost to fix? Should I replace the entire exhaust system? Cost? Thanks in advance!

up to you whether you are going to do anything about it. either buy a new section, go to the junkyard, weld up the hole, or wrap it in some high-temp wrap apporopriate for the application. it shouldnt cost anything over 100 dollars.
If the leak is small, some "muffler bandage" would probably hold it a couple of months. I had the same thing, but the welds had completely disintegrated. Came off in 3 pieces! I bought the part for about $100 and a local guy charged $40 to put it on. Problem solved.
get the moldable epoxy putty and plug it. Clean the area up with a wire brush and some sand paper and then mix that stuff up and put it on. It looks like you are putting chewing gum in it or something but it will last for a LONG time. It hardens so hard it can be drilled and tapped. That wil get it .
