Took my wife's 850 to the shop and they said the exhaust manifold is cracked and it was typical for '93's. He said$400 to replace it with a used one and$665 for a new one! He saidthis local muffler shop could weld it up for a lot less if I wanted.Has anyone ever had an exhaust manifold welded?What do you think about having an exhaust manifold welded. Will it last? I am not sure......

 

The exhaust manifold on my Elantra is cracked. I found out that it was standard procedure to weld cracked manifolds, so I guess the same would also apply to your 850. Hope that helps.

$400 for a used one sounds like a lot of money. Call around and see what you can buy one for at junk yards. I would go the used route, but if it was going to cost $400 I would try the welding. You could get most any mechanic or anybody good with a wrench to put an exhaust manifold on for you. It does not have to be a Volvo Certified mechanic for that. That is something I would definitely do myself and I am not a mechanic.

Sorry about the problem.

If if were my car, I would replace it with a new one rather than weld it (unless you plan to sell the car within a year or two) as I'm @n@l in safety.

Scan-tech (Swedish) makes new one with new gaskets for $285. But this one seems to fit only non-turbo and the model year 1993 does not seem included. You may want to call them, as they often have parts that are not on their on-line catalog.

It seems all parts I found are for non-turbo, for engines "B5254S" or "B5254FS".

If the engine matches your 850 and you are handy with wrenches, you can put the new one for/less than $400, as you can see at above vendors.

Welding takes years of experience, and if not done right, it may fail prematurely. And if there is one crack, there is a chance for another location to develop crack as well.

Anyway, if you're handy with tools, I would buy a new one from on-line vendor. If not, you may want to find out how much they charge for welding, as well as if they give you any warranty for the repair.

The guys at the official Hyundai repair shop have welded more than a thousand manifolds, since there was a very severe problem with the manifolds in the 97-2003 Elantras and Accents. In the US there was a huge recall, which was not applicable here in Argentina. They told me they only had problems reappearing in very few units, and the cost difference was enormous (something like 100USD vs 600USD).

 

↑There is the solution; drive to the nearest Hyundai dealer and have them weld your exhaust?
