Default desperately need exhaust manifold for b230ft (mitsubishi turbo)

ouch. mechanic called this AM, the exhaust manifold is badly cracked. this is on a 940SE wagon (1991, B230FT w/ the mitsubishi turbo) :-/

I believe this is P/N 3514440 ... anyone got one of these lying around I could score for a fair price, maybe left over from a upgrade/garret conversion, overboost, etc ?

i'm on the central California coast, and time is kinda important as we were hoping to get this car going by early next week so my son can take it back to college after thanksgiving.

those manifolds are prone to crack. how bad is bad? mine is cracked, and I am not worried.

you can always have him/someone weld the crack.

fyi, these 90+ manifolds sell over at turbobricks.com all the time.

Mine is cracked too. If there are no exhaust stains around the crack, just run it as is.

um, its off the car, my mechanic is replacing the head gasket and head already, he left me a message that the manifold was so badly cracked, he was afraid it would shatter and blow apart in use.

It won't shatter, your mechanic is wasting your time.

he says the cracks are big enough he can see sky through them... this car had a coolant hose blow and was driven about a mile to safety, causing the headgasket to blow and the head to crack. head has already been replaced.

anyways, after further consultation, he's going to have a welder who has a furnace for doing cast iron patch it up.

good. that should be cheaper then buying a one from someone. unless you went to the junkyard and got one.

if you get the manifold ported, it will be less likely/never going to crack again.

ported? I thought that was something you mainly did to heads, opening up and streamlining the ports for better air/exhaust flow at high volumes?

yep, but you can also port the manifolds, intake and exhaust, and turbo.

the opening on the stock manifold and stock turbo is tiny. that is one reason why they crack.

Found this old post about cracked exhaust manifolds because while replacing manifold gasket.... ta-da...I have a couple small cracks on the back side. Pierce, did you ever get your manifold welded and ported? How did it work out? What does the porting look like? TD

It could be that porting is similar to polishing the beams on the connecting rod. It smooths out the surface so that there are no longer stress risers that start a crack. So, porting, smoothing out the inside might help.

welder said he couldnt', I scored one from someone else.

a couple small cracks? they ALL have that at 20 yrs old. its great big gaping holes you can drop a dime through that you need to watch out for.

and, no, never tried porting it.
