Default Different Speedometer Question

Hello Everyone,

I spent last evening searching the threads for help with my speedometer issue, but nothing came up. The car is 1993 940 Turbo wagon. Here is the issue: the speedometer does not work (the needle is always at zero). The odometer *is* turning but is moving very fast (logging about 4 miles for every mile actually driven).

Added symptoms: for years the speedometer would stop working whenever we drove south to humid warm climates for vacation. It would either stay at zero or read very slow speeds (showing, like 20mph when we were traveling 65). Then the speedometer would kick back to life about one month of driving in the cool fall dry PA climate. It happened like this *every* year. Never any of the crazy gyrations that I read about on this forum. But this year, the speedometer never came back to life.

I would like to teach my son to drive on this great car, but learning to drive without a speedometer might pose a challenge for him.

Do these symptoms add up to anything? A new sending unit (hopefully!)? Or am I diving into the dash assemblies? Thanks for *any* thoughts!

Tom

Your speedometer is dead. Its electrical capacitors are bad and need to be replaced. There are several of them and they can interact and cause all sorts of weirdness, like you describe. You can use a GPS to tell you the speed you are going. Or have the speedo replaced/ repaired.
