Does anyone have step by step instructions on replacing a battery in a volvo 940?
Hi,
I have a V6 Volvo 940, May 1991 model,
I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me step by step how to remove and replace the battery?
Also, once battery is replaced, the battery is not charged... will jump starting it to charge be alright?
Thanks

there is no such thing as a V6 940
a 940 is a inline 4 cylinder. there was a V6 760, and a inline 6 960 (both the same basic chassis as the 740/940)
a new battery should be pretty much fully charged when you buy and install it.
you disconnect the ground strap first, then the plus strap off the old battery, slide the clamp (near the bottom of the battery, on the tray) to the side so the stock battery lifts out, wash the tray off with baking soda and running water to neutralize any spilled acid accumulations, then put the new battery in the tray, slide the lock slider back over the battery flange, connect the plus terminal, then connect the ground terminal.
use a volt meter, measure the new battery voltage, it should be about 12.6-12.7V if its fully charged, and somewhere above 12V at least. NOW start the car, and you should read 13.something volts, indicating that the alternator is charging the battery.
if the battery is totally dead, charge it with a car charger overnight before you install it.

There is no "lock slider" on a 940. There is a long screw rod that holds a metal plate that holds the battery down... Undo that rod!
And, new batteries come fully charged. If this one is not new, and at least not totally dead, yes, you could jump it, and if the charging system is OK it will charge it--allow about an hour of running the engine. Make sure the terminals are good and tight and making good contact with the battery posts...
