I just bought a 1990 Volvo 240dl with 270,000 mile on it from original owner.
On the way home I noticed Volvo ran dragging something behind.
try to adjust timing after I got home but timing is not changing even distributer turned all the way, also idle is not changing whilerotate distributer back and forth.
I could not figured what cause it.
Can you please help this issue ?

You can't adjust the timing on that car as it is computer controlled.

How well has it been maintained by the previous owner? It may just need a tune-up - new plugs, wires etc.

You can also check if any fault codes have been set by using the on-board diagnostic unit located in the engine compartment.

Previous owner maintained the car very well.
But don't know when tune up had done at this moment, I'll do it any way.
I don't have good ideas about on-board diagnostic unit. I found small black plastic box in the engine compartment front of driver side.
But I don't see any display device in the black box.
Do I have to buy unit to read fault codes?
