Default E85 for Volvo 240

How much E85 should I put in my 1982 Volvo 240 B21F9-CI to reduce exhaust emissions? If it runs leaner it should reduce emissions, right? Will adding 2 or 3 gallons of E85 to a 16 gallon tank remove water and help clean the fuel system without damaging anything?

Yeah, I wouldn't be putting that garbage into a vehicle that was never designed to run it. You're just asking for trouble. I have a truck that's E85 compatible, and I don't run it in that. It makes less power (less BTU's per gallon), attracts water, and gets TERRIBLE MPG's on E85.

Don't forget, leaner means HOTTER - more heat = less engine life; more wear and tear. Harder on the oil too, so increased maintenance costs. Plus, ethanol will attack all the rubber components of the system that weren't designed to be in constant contact with alcohol.

Clean air ain't free (ask anyone who lives in a state that tests for emissions every single year).

If you're willing to pay the price for something that won't make a lick of difference in anyone's life, or the planet's, that's your choice. Have at it.

I was recommended to avoid e85 in older vehicles, pretty much anything prior to OBD-II (>1996). You'll reduce your MPG at the cost of perceived lowered emissions.

Well, my 2007 Silverado was designed to run it ... and it STILL gets terrible MPG's on it.

Lucky to get 10 on that, 15-16 average on gasoline.
