electrical issues 240dl 1990
issues are there's power from the battery and no power coming from fuse #4, is there an electrical componet that can cause this power failure(no spark, no fuel pump).... any suggestion at this point. thanks
You won't have power to the fuel pumps until you have spark. The first step is to measure the small blue wire on the coil to see if you have battery voltage with the key on. If you do, there is a good chance that the crank position sensor is bad - this can be confirmed by checking the ignition OBD codes (socket 6).
No spark comes from 4 things: bad ignition coil, bad Power Stage, bad rpm sensor, or broken wiring to above. Somebody else said broken timing belt can also be a cause, but this can be easily discounted by opening oil filler cap and having someone hit "Start." If timing belt is broken, camshaft will not rotate. Go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com for free guide to no-starts for 740 (B230 engines).
guys thanks for the advice, after poking around I found a short coming off the battery to a fuse link with a 25amp fuse. this is suppling power to the coil and fuse #4.will change the link on the weekend... thanks again
Power to the coil is supplied by the ignition swtich. Fuse 4 (for the in-tank pump) is powered by the fuel pump relay. The 25A blade fuse is for the LH fuel system.
So I don't know if you are stating something in a general way or if someone has re-wired the car ....
