ouch. plugging/unplugging the AMM with it running can fry things. you should ONLY unplug or replug that if its shut off.

I wonder if perhaps the temp sensor is bad such that the car doesn't know its cold ? but it does sound like you may have a dead MAF... so I dunno. find another LH2.4 car thats running fine (740/940/240 from about 1989 forward, but not regina) and swap the MAF with it if the problem moves with the MAF, then you know thats the problem.

oh. and of COURSE you got CEL codes if you ran it with the MAF disconnected. reset the codes and drive it around some even if you have to nurse it to get going, see if codes show up. note you can have codes that don't immediately light the CEL but still indicate something is funky.

you reset the codes by holding the diagnostic button in for like 5 seconds or something. the procedure is detailed on that 7XX/9XX FAQ site I've posted before.

I had read elsewhere that unplugging the MAF sensor while the engine is running is a method to determine if the MAF is functioning or not. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read!

Hmm, find a running Volvo and try that MAF. Easier said than done! I may have to just buy another cheap 240 for parts.

Regarding a bad temp sensor, that wouldn't affect the cold starting would it? It's hard to start when it's cold, so perhaps a fuel pressure problem or weak coil?

Thanks!

In pricing a replacement MAF sensor, I have a 4-pin MAF rather than the, apparently, more common 6 pin. According the IPD parts website, that is for a Bosch LH 3.1 system. A new MAF is $600! They don't stock them, so it's a special order and takes up to 10 days.

None of the other places have this one listed on their website parts catalogs.

I wonder why Volvo used a variety of different systems? Any other parts sources to try?

Thanks!

I'm looking at VADIS (volvo parts CD). says a 1990 240 has either 3517020 (marked 0 280 212 016), or a 3517881 (marked 0 280 217 001).

at tascaparts.com, the first one is $277, the second one $466 (ouch).

you can get refurbished/repaired AMMs of varying quality for a lot cheaper.

VOLVO 240 244 245 2.3L N/A (88-93) MAF MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR 0280217001 3517881 | eBay (no idea if this is the right one, have to go by part number).

That sure looks like mine with the four pin arrangement. Is that a part no. that is marked on the MAF somewhere? I didn't look for a part no., but got it off a website.

3517881 is the volvo part number, which lists for something obscene like $600.

it says 0 280 217 001 on it, which I think is the BOSCH part number. that one I linked appears to be a noname clone, probably chinese. I have zero experience with these. I've heard the rebuilt and clone units have a higher DOA rate than the 'real' ones, but at 1/10th the price, its probably worth trying.
