Default Shifting handle is loose

Hey guys, my shifting lever on my 1991 740 is loose. I can move it about 1/2 an inch in either direction. Any way that I can tighten up the nut or something on it? If so, how? BTW, it's an automatic transmission.

Sounds like worn shifter bushings are your problem. They look like this.

I never replaced them myself, but I know they can be done yourself.

Try this. Transmission. Automatic AW70 and ZF

I agree with Burn Stains. I've done them. It's a piece of cake. These sit on clevis pins.

Great. Now, do I go from on top, inside the car to get to it? Or do I go from underneath near the transmission?

Underneath, with the car on jackstands. BTW, you can get these at the dealer and they're only a couple of bucks, as I recall. Once you get under there, it will be pretty obvious what needs to be done. As Titan Joe said, an easy fix. Minimal effort, high satisfaction..

Thanks guys, just ordered the part today and will be in tomorrow. The original bushing was entirely gone. Thanks for the info.

Yes. I seem to recall replacing two.

OK, I replaced one next to the transmission. Where is the other one?
