Engine question... '85 740 turbo
Ok, I was 99% sure that my headgasket was blown. (just bought the car with heavy white smoke from exhaust.) Upon teardown I have not found a spot where the gasket is compromised in any way. The anti-freeze looks like it was either new or in very good condition. The oil has been changed just before I bought the car so I cant find any evidence of water in the oil. I will replace all the gaskets as planned but Im not 100% sure this will fix the smoking problem.
I also have a question on the turbo itself (I have never owned a turbo). I found oil in the outlet side of the turbo into the intercooler hose and even some oil in the intercooler itself. I am quite sure that the turbo needs resealed. What I dont know is if the turbo is "in my league" to tear down and reseal.
I have a repair manual on order that will be here tuesday. I was just wondering if this was in the realm of possibility to repair the seals in the turbo with minimal tools.

Sorry you did all the work on the head gasket only to find it was OK.
No DIY repair is possible on the turbo. If the seals are gone, and all indications are that it has, it means a replacement turbo. In the UK we can get exchange units which work out a lot cheaper.
The intercooler will need to be drained and flushed out if you do fit a new unit.
Bill.

As far as the turbo goes would it be a good idea to clean it up with carb cleaner and let it dry. I am hoping that some of that oil that is in the turbo isnt due to seals leaking. I am gonna replace all the seals in the head and try and clean it up a bit before it goes back into the car, and hope for the best.
Sorry for the delay in replying.
I do not think the oil can be from anywhere else but leaking seals. However, I am a firm believer in trying all avenues before I buy new parts so give it a go with the carb cleaner. If you do find that you have the same problem it only needs the exhaust manifold taking off to replace the turbo.
