Fan in Front of Radiator...No Rotation
greetings..
I have a 1992 VOLVO DL-240, 230F, w/ a/c. Today noticed a fan in front of radiator so decided to test it. Applied +12v from battery and no rotation. I received another (used) fan identical to mine (BOSCH), applied +12 VDC from battery and no rotation.
Can both fans be bad??? I thought I knew my car but today just noticed the fan. I am not sure if the fan ever came on. I don't us AC in VT plus would have to convert the original system to modern refrigerant. Not sure i want to do this.
What is this fan for?? When does it operate? Do they frequently go bad?
Thx....great forum, great people, love my VOLVO

I've been selling used Volvos for 20 years and I remember the booster fan. Starting in 1991 the AC system was redesigned for R134a and they started using GM parts for the evaporator and accumulator which was a huge upgrade from the prior inadequate system.
Here in Alabama, those old systems just couldn't keep up.
The booster fan, as I recall, was connected to a high pressure switch on the AC condenser so that when the pressure went up, it kicked on.
How many terminals are on the fan motor?

There are two terminals, wires are colored RED and BLK. Connector is an "interlock" type and connects just to the right cable behind the VOLVO grill when removed. I can't believe (2) fans are bad
If you have access to a BOSCH fan, send me a PM. Maybe we can do some business. Perhaps a salvage yard in AL?? My car is all original, no rust, 132k miles, and now fighting a speedo/odometer problem (white gear needs to be changed in TRIP odometer).
thx for the reply...love VOLVOs

the aux fan typically only comes on when the engine is hot, or when the A/C is running.
on 1992+ 740/940, they got rid of the engine belt driven fan and went to a bigger electric fan thats two speed, runs at high speed when the engine gets hotter, otherwise at low speed. they also went to a bigger radiator.

His car is a 240 so it still has the engine driven fan.
It looks to me like the booster fan is a simple two-pin unit.

If putting 12 volts to the unit doesn't power it up then it is a bad fan.
