Default Radiator Fan - No Operation

I have a 1992 VOLVO DL-240 B230F engine, auto transmission, 151K miles. Just noticed today that my fan in front of the radiator is hard to spin. I disconnected connector plugs, applied + 12vdc, and no spin.

Obviously I have a faulty fan. When does this fan operate? Is there a thermal sw somewhere that causes the radiator fan to come on? The fan manufacture is BOSCH and I am told this fan can't be purchased. What is the substitute fan? FCPEuro has (2) types, both junk according to the reviews.

Thx ...great forum....great people.

One of the better fan manufactures is a company called HAYDEN. You can go to their web site or look at various auto parts suppliers. All you need to do is measure the old fan and get a "pusher type" replacement. I replaced my 89 740 fan but I changed my wiring so that it turns on when I turn on the AC or it will turn on with the temp switch located in the top of my radiator. I don't know if your 92 functions the same way. You most likely have a 134A freon system so you may not need the fan to turn on early. I had an R12 and converted to 134A thus needed to start the cooling sooner. Also the fan kits come with mounting provisions so it isn't a problem installing them.

typically, the aux fan comes on with the air conditioner, and/or when the coolant gets over some preset fairly hot temp

any 12 volt motor of about the same physical size, with the same diameter shaft should be adaptable.

Go to your local junkyard and see if they have a 240 and RIP the fan out of that
