Feeling like a moron
I have a 1992 Volvo 740 (non turbo) stationwagon and I have no idea if it's a v4 or v6!! I have read nearly the entire manual, I have searched numerous times online. The only thing I can find is that some 740's are v4 and some are v6. I don't know how to tell which mine is. Can anyone please help me? Should I just look around for cylinders in a v, and count?
the 760's and 780's came with either a 2.8L V6 or a 2.3L I4 (turbo), but the 740's were always the 2.3L I4 with or without turbocharging.
a V4 is a rather rare engine design, the only one I can think of are early Saab's and Ford Capri's.

If you look under the hood (and assuming the car isn't some modern thing with plastic junk hiding the actual engine), you would see 2 heads & valve covers on a V engine and one on a inline. you would see 4 spark plugs and their wires on a 4 cylinder, and 6 on a 6 cylinder. if it was a V6, there would be 3 on each side. you'd also see 4 ports on the intake manifold of that 4 cylinder, and 6 on the 6 cylinder, ditto exhaust headers, the inline 4 would have 4 in a row on one side of the engine, while the V6 would have 3 on each side.
[of course, there are always exceptions to every rule.... Subaru and old Volkswagens use 'flat' or 'opposed' motors where there are two heads but they are directly opposite rather than in a 'V' configuration.... VW/Audi also had a VR6 engine which was sort of in between an inline and a V design... and there's a few other exotic designs]

I thought saabs were boat anchors
I never could trust a car company that took several years to realize, that they were putting the engines in backwards!

hey, the Saab 900 coupes were pretty neat cars. we almost bought a 900S circa 1986-87 (but got a 240GL instead.... my wife, who has very short legs but a long torso, feltt he windshield on the saab was claustrophobically close...).
