Flashing orange up arrow on my dash
I have a 89 240 dL 5 speed m47 that I bought not long ago and all was good and seemed to work properly until that up arrow which I thought was a shift light started flashing and me engine dies under any load. It idles fine and starts right up for an almost 30 year old car..but my question is does that up arrow light just for the transmission or does it double as somthing else like fuel or air?? But there’s no leaks anywhere it was a garage kept car all it’s life and I am the 3rd owner
yes, that light is just an up-shift indicator, it shouldn't come on in 5th gear, but in any other gear, if you're not accelerating briskly, and are above some reasonable RPM, it lights to suggest you use a higher gear for fuel economy.
dying under load, and that light blinking could indicate a lot of things, like an air leak in the intake path, a flakey MAF, dying CPS, etc etc.

ah now that I see this post could someone send me a picture of what the wiring looks like for that light I would like to have mine working but it doesnt or do you have to be at a crazy high rpm for it to work? 1985 volvo 245 dl manual overdrive

it probably comes on at like 2000 rpm if you're just coasting down the road, certainly by 2500
this is the wiring diagram for a 1985 240 shift indicator... 2nd diagram is the parts locator... note it doesn't include the OD circuitry, thats on different pages.

Mine works and though I will keep it working for originality, it seems to indicate an upshift way to early. I use engine RPMs more as an indicator than the upshift arrow.
1st to 2nd is around 2800 RPM at 15 MPH
2nd to 3rd is around 2300 RPM at 25 MPH
3rd to 4th is around 2000 RPM at 35 MPH
4th to 5th is around 1800 RPM at 45 MPH
All of these are with stock size tires and no other modifications.

if you're driving at steady speeds and not accelerating, the automatic shifts even sooner than that. it will keep the RPMs down around 1500.... there's no need to be doing 3000 rpm when you're not accelerating briskly.
hey pierce I saw in the diagram that it says tachometer my car 85 does not have one so would that mean I dont have the indicator
nah, you'd still have the indicator even without the tach. tachs were optional most years, they replace the instrument panel clock (and generally came with a small clock in the center console upper left slot)
