Question Floor pans: New vs. salvaged

Hello! This is my very first post here...

I am the proud owner of a 1990 240 DL wagon that my wife and I got brand new as a wedding present.

30+ years and quite a bit of rust later, we are in need of a replacement floor pan. It's an expensive prospect, but even at $2000 for labor, it's worth it to keep our baby aloft.

I have a to-be-junked '84 240 sedan, whose floor pan I could salvage -- but getting it out would probably cost more than buying an aftermarket pan.

BUT -- who makes decent floor pans? Is there a difference between suppliers? I've seen them advertised for under $50, but that seems really cheap.

What should I look for (and where) in a quality floor pan?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

have you found an after market supplier for a replacement floor plan?? if you go used, then you have the complication of getting the old pan out of the donor car, disposing of the donor car, then cleaning up/patching any flaws and rust proofing (check with a local auto paint supply company for commercial rust inhibitors). If you are lucky enough to find an after market, the only concern I'd have is fit where you may need to trim etc. Don't think quality is an issue since you'd still want to rust proof the new part just the same.

I'd go for a salvaged one unless the new is OEM... Not thrilled with aftermarket panels for any car.

Thanks! $37 seems super cheap for something like that... Is that an unusually good price?

Chinese stuff is super cheap! I just got a new window regulator with motor for $30 shipping included! Don't know how they can do that...

haven't a clue! on the other hand i guess it may be worth the small risk to order one and see. that's the part you need right?

my son put a cheap chinese window regulator in our mercedes 300E, it failed 3 months later. the original had lasted 30 years.

No question that Chinese parts are substandard. My point is that to make a regulator and motor and ship it and sell it to the end user for $30 and have it work for however short a time is absolutely amazing! You can't express mail a letter to China for that.

I agree on buying quality for mechanical parts (like the cited window regulators) as well as rubber (ie bushings, control arms etc). For bent metal like replacement floor pans, fenders etc, there may be differences in the thickness and the quality of the steel. For exterior metal (ie fenders) fit and thickness are more of a concern than say for a floor pan but there you'd worry about longevity which requires proper rust prevention.
