my oil sensor was replaced middle of February. The light did not come until 2 days ago. It started to flicker, when I hit gas light fades, when light get more intense complete stop. When it is cold the light stay off until it runs then the light starts flicker oil is leaking around my gasket cover and may be affecting spark plug performance. no engine light no over heat no strange noises.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated .

What brand of oil sending unit? Why was it replaced? You may simply have a bad new oil pressure warning light sending unit. Or the wire to it is grounding out where the insulation is rubbed off. (if you simply ground the wire to it - the light stays on and yours flickers at weird times - could it be with the rocking motion of the engine that it comes on?) Best test if the wiring and the sensor is ok is to measure the actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

when you say gasket leaking do you mean valve cover gasket? if so it's a common leak just replace gasket.

Brand Echlin. The other was in there for 10+ years and started flashing then going off and on just like new one.

 

hard to tell but i replaced mine which was possibly original and could have been over 20 years old... anyway they are a cheap fix.
the gasket on the oil filler cap also leaks so you can check that too.

 

Have you made sure the bolts (nuts) holding down the Valve cover gasket are tight? I would still make sure the wire to the oil sender is not grounding somewhere making the oil light flash. Those engines generally do not have oil pressure problems to cause that symptom. I trust the oil and filter has been changed recently.

 

The wire casing was broken, it was attached directly by the mechanicand replaced with a new one. He says I need the camshaft gasket changed for the oil leak and change the timing belt and the alternator belt and compresor belt and the air mass hose. hw much will this cost, I only have 134000 miles on this car. This 1 owner car me I need some hood pad retainers. Are there any universal kind that would fit my 740. the front valve gasket was changed less than 2 years ago. Problem stopped with replacement of oil sending unit.
