hello all, i had oil seeping from oil cap, making a mess , so i replaced the gasket, and now created a large amount of oil leak in the front of engine... now i know the the pcv must be replaced and or flame trap , because the old gasket was venting the pressure,and saved the seals.. but now leak in front, so can anybody tell me where i can find pictures and or diagrams of the front where the seals might be so i can get an idea of what i need to do.... and how expensive are the parts..., i will remove the oil cap and see if front leak slows down..

 

if its from the top of the front, above the water pump, its probably the camshaft seal, thats usually the first to go. use a real volvo seal, the after market ones are far more likely to fail prematurely.

if its from the bottom of the front, it might be the main crankshaft seal.

fixing either requires pretty much all the work of doing your timing belt, so you might consider doing that at the same time.

you undoubtably need a new flame trap, and it wouldn't hurt to replace the plastic oil collector box that the flame trap sits in, as its likely old and going to fail at any point. this is all under the intake manifold on the left side of the engine block.

I have a copy of the VADIS CD which is the older dealer parts catalog that has decent diagrams showing part numbers, but it doesn't really show you how it goes together any more than that diagram does.

if there's oil everywhere, I'd suggest spraying it down with some cleaner and hosing it off, then keeping an eye on it over the next couple days and see where the oil is coming from.

 

Yeah, right... There is actually no way to see where the leak comes from even after "hosing it off", without taking off the front covers. The leak, if in front, comes from one of the seals, the camshaft (top), the intermediate shaft (middle), or crankshaft (bottom). Any of these leaking, the oil leak will be from the bottom of the lower timing cover. If you are lucky the leak will be from the camshaft seal which is accessible with removing just the top cover, thus not necessitating removing the timing belt.

 

don't you have to remove the camshaft pulley, which requires at least partially removing the timing belt?

 

thanks all.... leak was at the intermediate seal... a little red round washer like seal....was pushed out....i pushed back in , cleaned fire trap... and removed new oil cap gasket, put old one back on to relieve excess pressure...and no more leak...... is this possible or should i still replace gasket ?.........

 

if you cleaned the flame trap and oil seperator box, then you should be able to use the new cap and not have it blow the seals out. if the seal doesn't leak, I guess its OK ? hopefully no oil got on the belts, including the timing belt.

 

thanks again pierce, i have not cleaned out the oil seperator yet, after i do , i will put on new oil fill cap gasket, but now until this weekend, to relieve pressure .its leaking at filler cap..
