frozen odometer 1987

I am trying to register my old faithful 1987, and must have the odometer working again. i removed the instrument panel and checked all the connections. My radio doesn't work either, but I am just looking for the odometer repair.

I couldn't get the needle off to remove the metal cover over the speedometer and odometer , so i tore it off, but the cover won't slide out of the center hole.

I considered removing the metal cover with wire cutters and then slipping it out. I changed my mind, because tthe instrument panel is perfect, so i glued the needle back on, put it back together and I am asking for your help?

I can't find any diagrams or information on the odometer!! Help if you know how to get this little but critical gauge restored to rolling away the miles?
