Default Is this a fuel issue?

Hello everyone,

Ive read other threads here but my problem seems to be a little different. I have a 82 245DL wagon 2.1L w/ k-jet. Basically the other day when i left the grocery store and got in my car , started it and i heard the whining from the pump in back which is always there but this time the whining was intermittent like it was cutting out in spurts. I started backing out of the parking space and i noticed it was hesitating/bucking severely. Now i only live about a mile away so i just went for it. The car stalled at least 7 times and was acting like it was running out of gas but i had 1/2 tank. Needless to say i barely made it home and its been sitting for a few days. I just went out and started it right up and the whining from the pump is back to normal and its running fine now, i even revved it up several times with no cut out or hesitation. Im pretty sure the in-tank pump has been replaced within the last 10k miles but im not sure of the main outside. I was under the impression that pumps either work or they dont so why would it pretty much fail 1 day and the next start right up and act normal. Granted i havent driven it as im afraid the same thing will happen. The fuel filter, spark plugs/wires, air filter, o2 sensor, dist. cap/ rotor are all pretty much new. What do you guys think?

Probably the in tank pump. You heard the main pump whining louder because it was possibly starving for fuel. Sometimes when you first start a car up that has a bad pump, it will run fine, as the pump warms up it will degrade in performance because it starts spinning slower.

thanks, that seems to be a good place to start and its cheaper than the main although i'll probably do that as well here soon.

I had a similar problem (minus the noise). The hose on the in-tank pump that connects it to the metal line on the pump/float assembly was rotted to nothing and it was sucking air below 1/2 tank or on acceleration (fuel sloshing will cause the car to buck, mine did). It ran ok with a full tank though. I'll go with adub and say pull the in-tank pump and check everything out, chances are this is where the problem lies

Thanks for the help guys , much appreciated. I checked the electrical at the pre- pump and it was fine so im pretty sure the pump is done. Im ordering a new one + new hose, clamps, filter so i can get it done right.
