Fuel Pressure Regulator 240 -- Will 88 work on 89?
My girlfriends 89 240 wagon is having fuel issues, and I think I've narrowed it down to the fuel pressure regulator. I have an 88, and the local junk yard has an 88, and the regulator looks exactly the same, but everwhere I look online they seem to sell the 88 regulator, and the 89-93 regulator. What is the difference? Will an 88 regulator work on an 89?

The reason is the 240 went to LH2.4 Jetronic fuel injection in 89. The fpr's have different part numbers...0280160292 for 88, 0280160294 for 89+. The good news is, I'm bot sure the pressure is different...at most probably only .5 bar different. Her LH2.4 will compensate for any difference in pressure. What makes you think the issue is the fpr?

Well when starting the car, you would have to turn it over 3 or 4 times before it would actually start, and then it would idle really rough, until finally dying altogether after about 10 seconds. I went ahead and pulled that FPR off at the junk yard for $20 and it fixed the problem! The junk yard car had a cool look speaker fade **** in between the rear defrost and hazards so I had to grab that of course too :P

Nice score on the fade ****...those are kid of scarce these days. If the symptoms return, it may very well be the fuel check valve that is between the inline pump and fuel filter. That valve is what keeps the line pressurized and lowers starting time. It isn't essential unless you're in sub-zero temps...but nice to have the car right. Glad the fpr is working. With LH2.4 and a turbo motor in my 89, I've used 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 bar fpr's depending on the size of the injectors. LH2.4 will learn the changes in a day or so. Happy motoring!!
