Default Fuel Smell 93 Volvo 240 WGN

Have a strong gas smell from rear of car. Mechanic has replaced lines which he claimed he found a leak. No evidence of any gas leak at tank but now says tank must be leaking from top. Don't want to replace tank if not necessary. Any suggestions - I hear static sound, buzzing from right rear, he claims that is normal. Totally frustrated and concerned with driving car as well as nauseated by fumes. Thank you

the buzzing is the fuel pump.

check your filler tube/ gas cap. I had a similar fuel smell in the 740, and the filler tube was bent from the many years and abuse when filling up which didn't let the cap seal. I used some used chanel lock's to round it out.

could be another problem. wait for the experts.

There are 2 evap lines that feed into the tank...one entrance is at the bottom of the gas filler hole, you can see it if you remove the cap. That line runs straight to the tank. Could be leaking. There's also a line that runs from under the driver's headlight (charcoal canister) all the way to the back ofthe car. Worst case scenario...have him hook his smoke machine up to the lines and look for a leak. Before you commit to a new tank, have him check again for leaks using smoke. The tank is held in w/ 5 bolts but he should be able to examine the tank in situ using an inspection mirror and a flash light.
