Default Gas Gauge

Hello all, I have recently purchased a 740 Gl Wagon and my gas gauge does not work. It it is in the red, but I have noticed that when I turn the car on that the gauge moves slightly. Is the gauge really broken or is stuck in a position and would it be wise to remove the dash cover and move the gauge over some????

Welcome to the forum.

The gauge is probably OK but the sender unit in the tank could be faulty. They usually go before the gauge.

Thank you for the welcome. Do you think that it will be expensive to fix at a dealership and will the tank need to come off in order to fix something like that?

hit the dash sharply above the gage and see if it starts working. my son's 740 does this.

It is the gauge itself that is bad OR the sending unit in the gas tank which is attached to the fuel pump. Tapping it may get it going but it's doubtful, this works with intermittent cases. I'd start with the gauge wihich is easier and cheaper, one from a wrecking yard will cost you next to nothing, then it'd be the sending unit which is not a hugely big job but it's a bit of a hassle but by no means beyond the DIY.
