Default gears

Hello, i have a 98' volvo 940 and i have a question.
Every place i checked it said it has 4 speed tran, and ofc you can feel it changing gears but at high speeds (105 KM/H) it shifts again, from 2700-2800 RPM to like 2400+-.
So my question is, is it 4 speed plus overdrive (5 gears)?

Volvo 940/960s came with 4 speed autos but the variants were the 3 speed plus overdrive or the 4 speed with lock up torque converter. The 940s were only sold in the US until 95 and the 960s until 98. Not sure which engine your car has but my guess is you either have the AW30-40 or AW30-43 transmission. (basically its the same as a Toyota!)

US model 940's all have AW70, AW71 (mostly on turbos), or AW72 (16v only) transmissions. The AW30-4x are an electronically controlled version used on the 960's, and identified by having sport/economy and winter buttons near the shifter.

my AW7x cars will shift into OD(4th) as low as 35 MPH (55 km/h) if you're just coasting along. They will stay in 3rd as high as 100 MPH (160 km/h) if you're pedal-to-the-floor accelerating.

now, you might have the AW70L version, these are more common overseas, they have 'torque converter lockup', which at cruising speeds will lock the torque converter, this will drop the RPMs slightly and could feel like another shift.

Yes my 4th gear also shifts at 55 km/h if im coasting along, but at 105 km/h no matter the pedal location, i mean i can do a speed run or just going on a highway, it will "shift", always at 105 km/h.
i guess its the "torque converter lockup", can you explane what does it do? and why is it good?
and i have a b230fk so i guess i have the AW71 ?

I'm not familiar with the B230FK. B230FT is the 2.3L turbo, B230FD is 'pulseair'. B230E and ET are european high compression versions

as I think someone said earlier, the 940 was dropped in the US market after model year 1995. We never saw the facelifted 940's, only the 1995-97 960 was facelifted.

ok. dug into the older volvo electronic parts catalog called VADIS, this was released in 2005, and covers all models up to then. normally, I have it set for US only models, but I just selected 'european', and it looks like the B230FK was a low pressure turbo with no cat, pretty much same engine as my B230FT but smaller turbo with max 4PSI boost. l

I don't see any AW71L listed, nor does the transmission parts include the lockup stuff. All the european market 1998 940's were turbos, and all had the AW71 auto or M90 5-speed.

In light of what I said in that last post, something is wrong with that shift.

you have the button for OD lockout, right ? cruise at 120 km/h (75 mph) or whatever, then push that button, if its geared like mine, the RPMs will go up to almost 4000 or so and you'll need more throttle to keep it there. its safe to cruise at that RPM all day if your cooling system is in good shape. push the OD again, and the RPMs at 120km should drop to like 3200 or something, unless you have a different final drive.

whoa. vadis says international market 1998 940 could have anywhere from a 3.31 to 4.10 rear end.... so depending on what you have, your shifting could be happening way higher speeds than mine. 3.10 is a LOT taller than my 3.56, so my 60 might be your 70, depending.

the B230FK has the same turbo as the FT just a diffrant wastegate pressure.
and at 120 km/h my engine revs at 2500-2600 RPM, and yes the 3rd gear is almost at 4000 RPM, as i said at 100 km/h its on 2600 RPM if you dont push it (3000 if you do) then at 105 km/h it will drop to 2400 and will act like direct drive, you let go off the throtle the revs wont go down (will go down very slowly as the car is slowing) and when you get back to less then 105 km/h it will go down by alot (like a normal gear would).
I guess it's that 'torque converter lockup' like you said before.
