Default Hard steering

My 1990 740 started have very hard steering. I know the usually the power Streering pump is very reliable on these. I check level and hear not squeek of the belt. Any Ideas.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem and seeking answers to the same quesion - sorry I can't help, but as I see you posted this a month ago I am hoping you have since found out what the problem was? : ) my main quesion is whether its safe to drive with heavy steering (when the belt seems fine and there is fluid in the system). I can't afford to have anything else done on my 740 this year - I have spent too much and this will be the straw that sends this old boy to the scrap heap in the sky...

Probably the rack, costs about $250 with trade in of the old one.
The seals wear out, they don't sell rebuild kits.
My steering has been stiff for yrs.
But i got great arm muscles from it.
