Default heater?

I am sure this have been covered but on my 88 240 the heater makes a high pitched squeal with limited defrost or heat coming out and when i cycle through th speeds seems like that isn't working properly so do i replace just the blower motor or resister and how do you know the resister has gone bad

if the fan works on all 4 speeds, the resistor is probably good, especially if the fan actually blows at 4 different speeds. have fun replacing the blower, i just finished replacing one on my '87. took well over 8 hours of work, and i am very mechanically inclined.

i generally enjoy working on my vehicles ('87 4runner, '87 4runner, '88 4runner, '88 240, '87 240, '48 dodge 1.5 ton, '89 camry, and '75 cj - yes, i own all of them and they all work), but i didn't enjoy anything about replacing the blower in the '87 240. it was a b!tch of a job, and a pita. i won't be doing it again on either of the 240s if the blowers fail or the resistors do; i will junk the car for it.

4th speed on the fan switch sends battery voltage directly to the fan, completely bypassing the resister. The other three speeds are controlled by the resister - if the fan goes slower on 3,2,1 positions - then the resister works.

Your fan motor could be squealing because it lacks lubrication and is partially seizing, unfortunately there is no good way to lubricate it - without taking it out.

"Limited defrost or heat" - On a 240 the floor, defrost and re circulation vents are controlled with vacuum - there is a small vacuum hose attached to the intake manifold with a check valve that makes the vents work.

When the vacuum hose breaks the default is floor vents on all the time, if vacuum is present you can turn off the floor vents, turn on the defrost vents or close the recycle flap.

If the ac compressor control twist **** is turned - that will turn the fan on low speed.

Check the fuse - if good check power to the fan motor - then replace the motor - it's never the switch and it should still blow on speed 4 if the resister is bad.

its Fuse 3....

white-black wire goes from fuse 3 to pin 6 on the fan speed switch. pin 4 of the fan speed switch has a red wire that goes to the actual fan.

pin 4 also has a blue wire which goes to the resistor output, the resistor is in the airbox above the fan itself. when the fan switch is on the highest setting, it directly connects the power (pin 6) to the fan motor (pin 4).

the other 3 speed settings, speed 1 powers pin 7, black wire to the resistor. speed 2 powers pin 2, brown wire to the resistor, and speed 3 powers pin 3, white wire to the resistor.

on a 240, the fan is a **** to get out and replace, you have to remove the whole dashboard, or use the 'chain saw' method where you remove the center console pieces, and cut holes in both sides of the air box to extract the motor fan assembly, then tape those cut pieces back in place after replacing said motor.

this job is much easier on 740/94o where the fan is behind/below the glovebox.
